I've been slacking off a little bit today, being lazy around the house and playing some games. Read this story...

It's a social thing

By Alex on July 31st 2008 - 4 comments

Update August 1st, AOL bought Social Thing.

Today I got an invite code from ratemyideas for Social Thing. I'd never heard about Social Thing before his Plurk, but it definitely caught my attention very quickly. So what is Social Thing?

Simply put, it's a way to manage all your social networks in one spot. If you're constantly switching through tabs to see the last info on Twitter, Plurk, Facebook, Digg, Flickr and other social networks, Social Thing might be your savior.

I signed up and added my delicious, Plurk and Twitter accounts to my Friendstream. It did ask for my Twitter password. I know a lot of people are very hesitent to give out that sort of information, and I am too. That's why I haven't tested the Digg / Facebook features. There are just some passwords I'm not willing to give out.

Twitter is the only account where I needed to supply my password. As for Plurk and Delicious, right now they just show your updates, not your friends updates. A little pointless, but hopefully they'll fix this soon. When I go to my Friendstream, everything is organized so nicely from newest stories to oldest. You can reply to tweets from friends right from the Friendstream, no reason to even visit Twitter!

If you have lots of friends, avatars help a lot. But Social Thing lets you color-code the update bar for all of your friends. This would be great for making an inner-circle of friends, so you easily recognize the information you want to read first. They have an Ajax background (like Plurk has now) that's constantly checking for updates and delivering them right to you. So instead of wasting time going from site to site, it can all be displayed nicely in one spot.

Like I said before, it's in private beta right now, you need an invitation code. I have two invitation codes. If you want to try Social Thing, just be one of the first two people to leave a comment below asking nicely (or not so nicely, I don't care), and it's yours. Use the email address you want me to send the invite to in the email box below.

Well, I'm really interested in one of those invitation codes. I also read about the project in Plurk and want to be the first to review it in Portuguese :)
