The new .me domain extension

By Alex on July 17th 2008 - 2 comments

Today, GoDaddy opened up registration of the domain extension ".me" for the country Montenegro. They are advertising it as a place for you! I guess they're encouraging you to get yourname.me (I wonder what will happen to yourname.name). TechCrunch reports that registrations got off to a rocky start being of an overload on the servers. And as a result, multiple people were able to register the same domain name.

I decided to see if there were any decent names left, most verbs like hug.me, kiss.me and (what seems like) everything else are already taken. Not a big surprise.

I first tried to register mtv.me which said (to my huge surprise) it was available. After forking over $40 for a 2 year registration, I instantly get an email saying the domain is already registered and that refunds will be issued accordingly. I hope they don't lag on getting these refunds back.

I'm a political junkie, so as I scoured for political domains, I found politic.me was available, and I even successfully registered it! Woo-hoo a new website for me to build up and monetize. I was able to secure one more .me domain name (short 2 word phrase) but I'm not going to release it just yet.

Then I had a great idea (I thought)! Surely I was the only person original and fast enough to come up with this great domain name: donttaze.me - sadly it was already taken.

There are still a ton of great domains with the .me extension available, you might just have to get a little creative to get one. But if you're going to try, try soon. I'm sure they'll soon be gone. GoDaddy is the only registrar selling .me domain names currently, and the minimum registration is 2 years for $40.

I found a few other cool ones but the domains are a little expensive, and I won't take to take on too many new projects at once. So I'll see how the first two go and decide if it's worth registering more .me domains. dontcopy.me is my favorite (currently) available domain that I didn't register, you're welcome to snatch it up. If you do let me know as I'd love to see what you do with it.

I'd also like you to leave a comment if you had any success in snagging a great .me domain name, or any .me domain name for that matter. And what do you think about the new TLD?

I am not sure I will jump on the .me bandwagon that everyone seems to have already jumped on.

I just can not imagine many people remembering a .me extension. I know that most .com's are gone, but everyone who knows how to get online automatically thinks a website is a .com.
